An Insomnia Memoir

Patricia Morrisroe
But, what about the other side: the anecdotal. Although there are different opinions on this, I, for one, think anecdotal accounts have a deserved place in serious research. And, that’s part of what makes Wide Awake: a Memoir of Insomnia by Patricia Morrisroe a potentially interesting piece of work. Morrisroe describes herself as a lifelong insomniac, and she gives her painful account, apparently, of how “sleep broke [her] heart and then it tried to kill [her].” I came across an interesting interview with Ms. Morrisroe here.

Can Insomnia Kill You?
The New York Times has an interesting article exploring whether insomnia can kill you. The short answer is no it cannot kill you. There is an extremely rare form of insomnia that can potentially be fatal, but it only affects 100 people in the world: so, chances are you are okay.

Insomniacs Don’t Live As Long
We’ve talked a lot about the daily problems insomnia causes its victims. New information however suggests that insomniacs don’t live as long as non-insomniac people. Wow, if there were ever a reason to get a Rozerem prescription and start getting your proper rest…there it is! Take a look at the death statistics of those who suffer from chronic insomnia. This is really scary stuff.

Too Much Sleepiness?
I see today Martha Rosenberg has written an interesting article, Do You Have Excessive Sleepiness, with the tagline Pharma hopes so. She’s referencing shift work sleep disorder, and she’s attempting to be clever and humorous. Really though… the world has had it’s one Andy Rooney, and God help us that was more than enough.
The thing about sleepiness and insomnia though…and, as a poor guy who suffers from these problems…I can tell you that it’s not something to joke about. Such humor is in very bad taste. If you’ve ever gone for three weeks averaging ninety minutes of sleep a night… believe me… Pharma is the last thing of which you’re curious about…you want relief for the insomnia! I wonder if Ms. Rosenberg has ever suffered from insomnia. Only then do you really understand the full context of the word “suffered” in the expression “suffered from insomnia.” And, you may not so casually write off Ambien, Lunesta, Sonata, and Rozerem. You might actually come to think of that pill bottle as your salvation. Yes, that’s the sort of pathetic desperation that insomnia brings its victims. Yea, I did use the word victim! I just don’t think humor has an appropriate place in discussions about insomnia. Sorry Ms. Rosenberg.

How Big Is The Sleeping Pill Market?
I know that I struggle with periodic insomnia. It’s not any fun, and, it’s really been ultimately quite disruptive to my life and relationships. This lead to my journey through the world of sleeping pills, which ended, thankfully, with Rozerem.

I was wondering the other day just how pervasive sleeping problems are in our society (America) and internationally. I found an informative article which gives an interesting picture of this.
To get an idea, it’s always good to look to the spending of direct-to-consumer advertising. In the case of sleep medications, we see that last year $600 million was spent (which is double the year prior!) In 2006, Americans spent nearly $4 billion on prescription sleeping pills; and, by 2014, the market is expected to expand to $5.5 billion. Bear in mind, in 2005, over 43 million sleeping pill prescriptions were filled!
So, you can clearly see that insomnia affects a lot of people, and, an awful lot of revenue is generated because of this problem.
