What Is Rozerem?
Approved in 2005, Rozerem (Ramelteon) is the very first prescription insomnia medication which targets the normal sleep-wake cycle. It is a melatonin receptor agonist. What this means is that it stimulates the brain to release the natural-sleep inducing hormone called melatonin.
Rozerem is the first drug which doesn’t act by depressing the central nervous system. Rozerem does not work in the areas of the brain that affect memory or balance.
It is also the first insomnia drug without abuse potential. As a result, in addition to being FDA approved to treat at least one symptom of insomnia; Rozerem is not a controlled substance and can be used long-term.
So, you’re unlikely to get hooked on it. You just take it when you need it. And, stop when you don’t.
